Liliesleaf offers an empowering package to the youth of South Africa

“At the Rivonia Trialist Reunion held at Liliesleaf in December 2001 President Thabo Mbeki announced the establishment of the Liliesleaf Trust. The Trust aims to ensure that the unique heritage, history and legacy of Liliesleaf Farm are preserved for future generations.”

Liliesleaf is offering a ‘learner liberation package’ to educators, encouraging them to bring learners to Liliesleaf to engage in the history of the property, through an informative and interactive experience so that they may learn how the events that occurred at and originated from Liliesleaf have shaped our nation today.

Liliesleaf occupies a momentous place in South African history and socio-cultural evolution as it was the site responsible for breaking the resounding political ‘silence’ of the 1960s. Liliesleaf narrates the liberation activities that took place on the farm 45 years ago through interactive and experiential displays. The Resource Centre, which comprises the Library and Archive Centre, will broaden the channels of learning about South Africa’s political history and democratic identity. The Resource Centre will form part of the Learning Centre which also showcases the historical buildings, Liberation Path, and the Liberation Centre.

The history curriculum aims to empower young people with the knowledge to understand the roles, rights and responsibilities of citizens in a democratic South Africa and the values of democracy, equality, human dignity, social and environmental justice. The opportunity to be empowered with knowledge and with equal rights in a democratic society was bought about by the events that occurred at Liliesleaf. The story is waiting to be told.

The package costs R70 per child (under the age of 18) including entrance fee, a snack pack and an entrance voucher that entitles the bearer to 50% off on their next visit. The vouchers are valid from 1 September until the 31 December 2008.
